An historic Hellertown building that has been eyeballed for redevelopment in recent years has been listed for sale.

The Movies, a late-1930s Streamline Moderne movie house at 1152-1154 Main Street, is currently for sale for $300,000, according to the Lehigh Valley Association of Realtors' Multiple Listing Service.

The listing for the theater was added to the MLS on Feb. 9, and calls the building "a unique opportunity" for someone interested in converting it to office or storage space, a restaurant/pub, a dinner theater, a music studio or a gym/fitness center.

"Use your imagination," potential buyers are told.

The 8,064-square-foot blonde brick building--which has largely been unused for more than a decade--is located in a mixed use zoning district, with annual property taxes totaling $8,085.21 and a county-assessed value of $100,700, according to the information that accompanies the listing.

Listing information is "deemed reliable but not guaranteed," according to the LVAR website.

The former cinema is listed for sale by Greg Schiavone of ALT Realty, under the MLS ID number 424465.

In June 2011, The Movies--which was originally known as the Sauconia--was one of three borough buildings discussed at an EPA-led workshop about urban redevelopment at the local level. The workshop was held at Hellertown Borough Hall and was attended by the building's owner, George Howey, among others.

The other two buildings discussed at the forum were the former Champion Spark Plug factory on Main Street and an old chromium factory on Front Street, however their owners did not attend the workshop.

As of Feb. 9 Howey is still the owner of The Movies, according to the results of a Northampton County Property Records database search.

The lot the building sits on is .2994 acres in size, county records indicate.
