2 Bags of Marijuana Found in Car, Police Say
Hellertown Police say they found two bags of marijuana after searching a car in the 1600 block of Main Street.
Hellertown Police say they recovered two bags of marijuana after searching a car that was stopped in the 1600 block of Main Street Feb. 22.
In a news release, police said the car was stopped at 2:03 a.m. after its registration was determined to be suspended.
Police identified the driver of the vehicle as Nick Campanella, 39, of the 1100 block of East Third Street, Bethlehem, and said officers detected the odor of burnt marijuana coming from within his vehicle as they were speaking to him.
The bags of marijuana were allegedly found after the vehicle was searched.
Campanella and a passenger in the vehicle were each charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana.
That passenger was identified as Davon Robertson, 18, of the 200 block of East Weidman Street, Lebanon, in the Hellertown Police news release.
Campanella also was cited for operating the vehicle without registration and without insurance, police said.

Marajuana. A petty crime that takes up too much news feed on any site. Legalize!

I agree that pot should be legalized, but not because it "takes up too much news feed," but rather that it takes up too much police and court time.
What I don't get with this one is that pot was being smoked in the car and DUI is not an issue. Alcohol is legal but you can't drink while you're driving (i.e.-open container law), then why is it OK to consume an illegal intoxicant (pot) while driving?!? The current law gives a pass to "pot comsuming while driving" because a DUI has worst penalties than those for possesion of a small amount of pot. What gives?

Bob, Driving stoned is not like driving drunk.....did you ever hear of anyone being killed by a stoned driver?

Yes, it happened to one of my friends in college. He was the one who was stoned and he did the killing. This was 40 yrs ago and he went to prison for a long time. I'm sure there are countless other serious and fatal accidents that are cause by driving stoned or while on other drugs every year. Pot surely can make you tired and fall asleep at the wheel. You know what can happen then.
If you think that you can be as stoned as you want and still be fine to drive, then you are self-denial about what THC does to your reaction time, judgment of speed, distance, etc. I hope you realize that being stoned does impair your ability to drive. And yes, I smoked pot while in college so I'm not talking without experience.
But the law I was refering to was about having an open container of alcohol (wine, beer, etc). A person could have no alcohol in their system, and still get a DUI type charge and consequences. The law has no such equivalent charge for driving while smoking pot. That is the injustice.

Yeesh. This shouldn't be illegal in the first place. If he was high and driving, maybe that should be illegal... although marijuana doesn't affect a user as intensely as alcohol does.
Remember kids, never consent to searches when you're pulled over. :-)
